On June 12, 1948, women achieved a significant milestone as the U.S. armed forces officially granted them the right to serve as regular and permanent members. Since then, women have played pivotal roles in military conflicts, starting with their invaluable contributions as washerwomen and presiding over massive hospitals as Civil War nurses. They have overcome barriers and restrictions, gradually expanding their involvement and rising to command positions in non-combat units by 1970.
The journey towards equality continued in 2013 when women were granted full status in the military, including the right to serve in direct ground combat roles. This historic decision acknowledged the exceptional skills, resilience, and leadership abilities that women bring to the armed forces.
In the State of Oklahoma alone, approximately 22,000 female veterans embody the strength and determination that have defined their service. These remarkable women have conquered countless obstacles and shattered barriers, showcasing their exceptional capabilities and unwavering dedication. Their selfless sacrifices have contributed to safeguarding the freedom we cherish, while their unquestioned loyalty and valor serve as an inspiration to future generations.
Today, we honor and express our deepest gratitude to these trailblazing women who have served in the U.S. armed forces.
