During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Stan Booker and representatives from the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women recognized Desirae Schneider as Citizen of the Month for June 2023.

Schneider is the president of the Lawton Fort Sill Art Council and has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the enrichment of our community by promoting and providing art activities for children. It all started 15 years ago when she noticed we needed more art programs for the children. Schneider reached out and spread the word through the Lawton Constitution, the Lawton Fort Sill Art Council’s website, and her own social media platforms. Through the help of volunteers, she was able to organize and launch her first workshop, which served five children. Since then, the program has grown to up to 75 children.

Even the pandemic did not stop Schneider’s commitment. She adapted the program to include drive-thru arts and crafts activities. She wanted to ensure children continued to engage in creative projects even at home. Her dedication to making these activities accessible is commendable. She has always allowed attendance to be free of charge, relying solely on the generous donations of community members for supplies.

Her compassion is demonstrated through her provision of healthy snacks for children during these workshops. Schneider has went above and beyond for this program going as far as to making meals or desserts to trade for much-needed craft items. The efforts Schneider has put into securing donations shows her unselfish commitment to the program and progress of our community.

We want to thank and congratulate Desirae Schneider for her dedication and passion to serving our community!
