The Cameron University Department of Art, Music, and Theatre Arts will begin its 2022-23 season with “Alias Grace” by Jennifer Blackmer. The production will be presented in the University Theatre from Thursday, September 29, through Sunday, October 2. The curtain goes up on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $13 for adults and $10 for senior citizens, military, Cameron faculty and staff, and non-Cameron students. CU students receive one free admission with their CU I.D. Tickets can be reserved by calling the box office at 580-581-2346.
In 1843, teenage Irish immigrant Grace Marks was sentenced to death for committing shocking murders with a fellow servant but claims she cannot recall the horrific events, which served as the basis for Margaret Atwood’s fictional novel of the same title more than a century later. Eventually, with Grace’s sentence commuted to life in an Ontario prison, psychologist Simon Jordan interrogates her memories, actions that leave him reeling and others wondering if Grace was truly an innocent bystander or an evil mastermind with the ability to fool them all.
Araia Heathcott, Lawton, plays the title role of Grace Marks. Joining her from Lawton are Curtis Myers as her inquisitor Dr. Simon Jordan, Maliah Davis as the controlling matron, Victor Quinones as former coworker and potential co-conspirator, and Dakota Weeks as her former employer. Meanwhile, Jaiden Standridge, Duncan, plays Grace’s tragic late friend Mary Whitney, and Cole Nowlin, Anadarko, plays peddler and doctor Jeremiah/Jerome DuPont. Housekeeper Nancy, played by Shayson Lenee’, Comanche, also graces the protagonist’s memories.
They are joined by Carmen Head, Alvarado, Texas, as lighting designer; Aubrey Waxler, Del City, as costume designer; Francis Waweru, Nairobi, Kenya, as stage manager; Shalyn Bowles, Geronimo, as dramaturg, sound designer, and assistant stage manager; and Ky Elvina, Lawton, as properties designer. Operating the soundboard is Victoria Spruill, Duncan, with Rhia Pettigrew, Lawton, operating the light board. Allee Passmore, Lawton, works as house manager. The running crew/wardrobe consists of Alexzander Ernest, Lawton, and Marche McEntire and Natalie Small, both from Duncan.
Faculty working on the show include associate professor Eric Abbott supervising the costume shop and assistant professor Ben Williams as scenic designer. Assistant professor Dr. Natalie McCabe directs the production.
