It is National Hispanic Heritage Month! Western's Hispanic Student Association will be featuring a weekly student spotlight, throughout the month!
Meet Melissa Gonzalez-Rivera
Hometown: Frederick, OK
Major: Criminal Justice
Why Western? It gives me the ability to get my basics out of the way, while still being close to my family. I later plan on transferring to a four year university to start my choice of major.
Activities at Western: Hispanic Student Association, Rotaract Group, and Student Senate
Favorite thing about your culture: I have many favorites but my top two would be Dia de la virgen, which is a celebration for the Virgin Mary. The next would be the celebration of Independence Day, “which is celebrated in the form of El Grito.”
What does Hispanic Heritage month mean to you? It is an insight of how people reflect upon vibrant historical culture, social, and societal influence of hispanics within the U.S and throughout the world. It shows us many anniversaries of independence of several Central and South American nations.
