Cameron University Stumbles late, Falling to UAFS

Cameron dropped the Saturday afternoon contest 64-59 to Arkansas Fort Smith inside of the Aggie Gym.

The Aggies move to 9-10 overall, 6-7 in the Lone Star Conference, and 3-4 in the West Division.

Korie Allensworth scored a game-high 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor, 2-for-6 from three, and 5-of-8 at the charity stripe. Kiara Lovings chipped in 12, Alena Wilson added nine, LaKya Leslie recorded six, Katie King and Karley Miller scored four, and Kloe Heidebrecht and Kailyn Lay had two points.

Leslie pulled in a team-high 10 boards, Wilson grabbed nine, King collected seven, Allensworth snagged three, and Taliyah Johnson, Lovings, and Miller had one rebound.

King dished out eight assists, Allensworth added five, Lay had three, and Johnson and Leslie had an assist.

King swiped six steals, Allensworth and Lay grabbed two, and Leslie, Miller, and Wilson had one.

Wilson blocked one shot.

The Aggies came out the gate ready to play jumping out to a 9-0 lead three minutes into the game. UAFS would call a timeout and come out with an answer going on a 7-0 run to cut the score to 9-7 with just over four minutes left in the opening quarter. Both teams closed the first with six more points, with CU leading 15-13.

In the second, the Black-and-Gold started off with five points over the first three minutes, before the Lions would go on a 19-2 run, building a 10-point lead at 32-22. Cameron would make two shots in the final minute to go into the half trailing 34-27. Arkansas Fort Smith would shoot 50 percent from the floor in the second quarter, while knocking down 3-of-6 three pointers.

The Lions would extend their lead to 10-points early in the second half, holding a 29-29 lead at the seven-minute mark. The Aggies rally for a 5-0 stretch cutting the score to five-points at 39-34 after two Lay free throws at the midway point. UAFS closed the quarter on an 11-5 run to stretch their lead back out to 11-points at 50-39, heading into the fourth quarter.

Arkansas Fort Smith opened the final frame on a 6-0 run, building a 56-39 advantage a minute into the quarter. Cameron would go on a 19-3 rally to cut the game to one, at 59-58, after two makes from Lovings at the charity stripe. During the Black-and-Gold's run they would hold the Lions to 1-for-7 shooting from the floor, and force four turnovers. UAFS would make 5-of-6 free throws over the final 30 seconds to hold on for a 64-59 win.

CU shot 35.1 percent from the floor, 20-of-57 shots, 29.2 percent from deep, and 12-of-20 free throws. Arkansas Fort Smith made 22-of-52 shots, for 42.3 percent from the floor, sinking 6-of-19 threes for 31.6 percent, and 14-of-25 shots from the charity stripe.

The Aggies stay home to host West Texas A&M on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 5:30 pm.
