The Cameron baseball team opened up their season in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday afternoon and captured an opening-day victory behind an offensive outburst that produced eight runs.
The Aggies found themselves down one run after the first frame when Lubbock Christian saw Acosta strike for a double up the middle and was plated by Van Maane singling through the right side.
CU responded in the second thanks to a leadoff double by Jayce Clem before Drew Durst singled to drive him in to even the game back at one run a piece.
From there, Sophomore hurler Clayton McClenan settled in, cruising his way into the eighth inning, where his day was done. McClenan finished with seven innings pitched after allowing two runners on in the eighth as he struck out two, allowed eight hits, and one walk on his way to the first win of the season.
The Aggies' offense produced 12 hits on their way to eight runs, with newcomer Drew Durst tallying three hits, a run scored, and two RBI in four at-bats. Hunter Smith and Beau Williams each captured two hits and scored twice as Williams homered for each of his two hits. Lance Barnett also had a two-hit day on opening day, with Trent Mallonee, Clem, and Will Bradley adding a base knock to CU's hit total.
Williams led the team with four RBIs in his five at-bats.
The Black-and-Gold captured an opening day and opening series victory 8-7, with Evan Nichols chalking up the first save of 2023 for CU, and the second save of his collegiate career, with the last coming on Apr. 1, 2022, against Oklahoma Christian.
